"The North Carolina Gold Trail is a heritage destination trail that spans across the state whose purpose is to educate visitors about the NC Gold Rush and the significance it played in the history of the U.S. This trail is currently under development and counties will be added throughout the year."
"In the 1830s and 1840s, German immigrant Christopher Bechtler, Sr. and his family settled in the little town of Rutherfordton, establishing a coining business that produced America’s first $1 gold coin and ushered in a whole new era of commerce and trade."
Visitors can visit the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. Portions of the underground tunnels at the Reed mine have been restored for guided tours and a visitor center contains exhibits of gold and historical mining equipment.
